"Important! New StarCraft 2 hot slots interface system.
Hi, StarCraft 2 development team and all StarCraft community. My name is Dmitry Ovsyannikov. I am not professional cyber sportsman. I am casual player. But, I like all Blizzard games very much. So be patient and try to understand what I am going to say to you.
I like to play mouse only!
But today, all Blizzards strategic games have a very difficult micromanagement system.
Every unit and building in the game has their own building menu or menu for special abilities.
It is very difficult to control all units, special abilities, building and upgrade processes on the battlefield, when you are trying to control all of this by mouse.
And it is, also, very difficult for me to remember one hundred hot keys combinations. (Because, I am casual player. Not a sportsman. ) It sounds terrible for me when I hear: You should press B + B , V + C to build something. And dont forget to select this unit and then press R.
I can use Only One Simple, but Very Useful magic combination: CTRL + 1 (+ 2, + 3, +4, +5, +6, +7, +8, +9, +0) to bind unit or building and then I use button 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0) on the keyboard to select it.
Yesterday, I played in StarCraft on the Battle.net. One game I won. I played as Protoss and defeated 2 Terran players (they played together versus me). I won, because I am not bad StarCraft player and because they didnt use hot keys combinations like B + B. It was hard battle but I won.
In another game I played as Protoss versus Only One Zerg. In that game I lose, because he used one hundred hot keys combinations. And this is a BIG problem. He won because he was faster builder than me.
After that, I started to think: How can I help myself and many other casual players like me?
Hmm. Command & Conquer have a very good mouse only user interface. All building options stored in the cells of the One building menu. But, in Command & Conquer units and buildings dont have large system of upgrades and unit abilities.
Then I thought about Diablo: In the Diablo I have a belt (menu with cells), where I can put scrolls and potions. When I need to use scroll or potion, I can activate it by clicking mouse on it or I can press button 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0). Fast activation! This is great! Very helpful!
After that, I remembered Lineage 2: In Lineage 2 we have the same menu as belt in Diablo, but we can put there not only scrolls and potions but different action buttons (action icons) too and they can be activated by clicking mouse on them or by pressing button 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0). This is very fast and very simple! Great idea. This type of menu can solve my problem.
So, let me show you my vision of new hot slots (or cells) control system, that, I hope very much, will be realized in StarCraft 2.
This system works like belt in Diablo.
It contains 10 cells. Every cell can be activated by pressing left mouse button on it or by pressing the same numeric button on the keyboard (cell 10 is activating by pressing button 0 on the keyboard). In every cell we can put special action icon.
For example, look at the picture.
You can see pictures on my site
http://www.newtest3.narod.ru/
First, I selected group of units (18 units) and then pressed CTRL + 1 on the keyboard. (This is standart operation for all modern strategic games.) After that action, the squad icon appeared in the cell 1 of my belt (or cell menu).
And now:
- I can see, that I binded the group of units on button 1 (now it is difficult to forget what I binded on button 1),
- I can see how many units in the group,
- I can see status of the group (if units in the group will be attacked, then the red indicator will show me that this (not other) selected squad under attack),
- I can select this group of unit by pressing left mouse button once on the group icon in the cell or by pressing button 1 on the keyboard. If I double click left mouse button on group icon or double click button 1 on the keyboard, then camera will be moved to this selected group of units.
- I can drop out this group of units from my cell menu by using drag-and-drop method or, maybe, by clicking right mouse button on the group icon or by binding another group by using CTRL + 1 combination.
Then I press CTRL + 2 and put another group of units (12 units) in the cell 2. With them I can make the same actions as with first group of units in the cell 1.
Now I can fast and easy chose them and I can see their quantity and their status.
In cell 3 I put my favorite worker SCV and pressed button 3 on the keyboard. The indicator shows that cell 3, with SCV in it, is now selected. And here I can easy access to the SCV building menu. Now I can build my barracks faster.
But we can put not only units in our magic cell menu.
I selected group of buildings (6 building) and pressed CTRL + 4. Icon of the group appeard in the cell 4. If all selected buildings was the same type (factories for example) then I can easy access to their building menu and build 6 tanks together. If I selected different buildings, then if I press button 4 on the keyboard or click on their icon in the cell by mouse, then camera will move to them and I can repair them or build something in them or even move them in another place.
But that were old tricks. Now I am going to show you even more interesting things.
I am going to select Ghost. Ghost have powerful Nuclear Strike ability. I just press and hold CTRL button and then drag-and-drop Nuclear Strike ability of selected Ghost from his abilities menu to my cell menu (in cell 5). Now I can fast and easy access to Nuclear Strike ability of this selected Ghost when I need it. When I need to make Nuclear Strike I should press Nuclear Strike icon in cell 5 or just press button 5 on the keyboard. After that, camera will move to this selected ghost and I can easy place the marker for the Nuclear Strike. On the icon in the cell menu, we can place indicator of charge status of this ability.
In cell 6 I put Scanner Sweep ability of ComSat Station (I just press and hold CTRL button and then drag-and-drop Scanner Sweep ability into my cell menu). If I press ability icon in cell 6 (or press button 6) the ability will be activated and I will can use it to see dark area on the map and cloaked enemy units.
In cell menu we can even add upgrade and building processes.
I selected Terran Armory and opened its upgrade menu, then I pressed and hold CTRL button and drag-and-drop Upgrade Vehicle Weapons icon into my cell menu (cell 7). After that I pressed Upgrade Vehicle Weapons icon in cell menu. The upgrade was started. Now I can see the upgrade progress indicator. When upgrade will be ready, I can press this upgrade icon in cell menu again to start next level of this Vehicle Weapons upgrade. (That is great, because I dont need to look and search this armory on my bases, then select it, then search upgrade icon for Vehicle Weapons in menu and at last push it. Long road for easy operation.)
In cell 8 and cell 9 I drag-and-droped Crucio Siege Tank icons from two of my factories. Now I can faster and easy build my favorite tanks by clicking on their icons in my cell menu. In the cells you can see building progress indicators. But, there you can add quantity of building tanks in the stock of the factory.
You also can place other action icons in this kind of cells by using CTRL+NUMERIC BUTTON or CTRL + DRAG-AND-DROP combinations.
The cell 10 is empty now, but I think you already know what you can put in it.
So, that was my idea.
I think it is a great, fast and easy system, which can help many casual strategic game players. And I think it will be helpful for professional players too.
I hope very much that one day I can see it in STARCRAFT 2.
Thank you and please, sorry for my bad english. "
