Weiter so!

Hi, people.
Gecko who's been translating this thread for me, told me I could post here in English.

Short introduction: I'm Chapatiyaq, but call me Chapa. I'm French, and I edit Liquipedia for StarCraft II. I also follow the NBA, and got into following/watching snooker because of this fantasy league.

I feel very lucky to be #1 (actually just lucky not to be in last place) when I knew virtually nothing about snooker when I made the team. I realize Allister Carter was a risky choice that paid off, and that Sam Baird was a very bad choice. But it's great that after the first half of the season, everything's still possible for everyone.

I have to admit I didn't really follow the start of the season, but as my score got better lately, I've been following more of it. The UK championship was the first tournament I really followed (checking results every day, and eventually watching live on the final weekend) and it's been great, with Robertson's 147 and Liang Wenbo's antics. Even if I go down in the rankings, I'll keep watching.

Coucou, Chapa. Yeah, the UK championship was a cool tournament. Robertson seemed determined, he really wanted that title. The 147 was impressive, but I was even more impressed by Liangs reaction to it. I've been occasionally watching snooker for a decade or so, but the league really changed my habits. Instead of just watching a few of the bigger tournaments from the quarter finals up, I'm often watching the first rounds now to catch some players I don't know yet, and because you can actually see your guys play. It's awesome that the league got you into snooker, I hope you stick around.

High Break: Marco Fu (147)
Winner: Marco Fu

Next Event: German Masters Qualifier

Sidenote:

On sunday I entered the last tournament at our place. It was ghastly and I got raped. Again and again. This time more of the east German players showed up, some driving more than 200 km to enter this nonsense amateur event. Well... it seems my grid luck struck once again: Mr. 5-8th German Amateur Masters, another ex-Bundesliga player (retired, 20 years of experience I guess) and another guy slightly better than me.

The games went like:

Code:
Old Pro, Frame 1:

Gecko: Break off - F4 - 1 - 1
Old Pro: 1 - 19 - 19 - 21

Frame 2:

Old Pro: break off - 29 - 21
Gecko: 1 - F4 -

"normal player", Frame 1:

Gecko: Break off - 1 - 17 - 13 - F4 -
"normal player": - F7 - F4 - 25 - 9 - 1 - 18

Frame 2:
"normal player": Break off - 1 - 17 - 19 - 18
Gecko: - 1 - 12 - 1

The games against our local star were the worst. I didn't quite score, like at all, so did he. However, I managed to snooker him on several occasions, mostly due to luck though. I don't think he quite concentrated, it was the last game of group stage and it didn't really matter.

But hey I managed to score a 17, even though I made like five or six 30-40 breaks just the evening before :ugly:

Naja, die Notation ist einfach.

Daher:
Break off -> Startstoß
FX -> Foul, X Punkte wert (4-7)

If Marco Fu keeps playing like that, you don't have to worry about your anti team anymore :deliver:.

My anti team is doing pretty good, all thanks to Matthew Stevens, even his website is down. A little bummed White didn't make the cut for the masters, but at least it's in favor of Maguire. Trump's performance is still iffy, even though he's the one that made me the most points so far. He's really impulsive at the table, and it doesn't work in his favor at all, like it did for Ronnie. My prediction for the points he's going to earn me for the rest of the season is bagel, but honestly, nobody has been doing what I expected of them in this season, at all. Trading him for Higgins or MJW is a viable option, might check out their all their last games to figure out if it's worth it, during the break. Or Marco Fu. :troll:

Can't get too comfy at the top, even the next tournament might completely flip the table again. It's crazy how many points you can get if your guys suddenly have good draws and just do better in general, the graph has become pretty interesting.

Yup, it's tough. Murphy isn't playing too well at the moment, but I'm confident he'll find his game again.
I'm fine with my anti, Gould is performing better than expected but the others pretty much do what they're supposed to do. :ugly:

The past two matches I saw, Sullivan didn't quite win, it was more like his opponents lost. MJW played sloppy, to say the least, whenever push came to shove. Against Selby, Sullivan made a ton of mistakes (more than Walden did during an entire match Sullivan wasted in one frame), which Selby just didn't exploit; even the frames he won, he suffered from a ton of kicks, unlucky splits or big bounces. Ghastly. Don't get me wrong, Sullivan displayed professional form and played well-ish, but compared to the standards of the other games (or Sullivan's killer form) it was kid's play. Selby-Walden, Higgins-Wenbo, Allen-Murphy and Hawkins-Perry, Robertson and Trump, all of them were a class better, as their opponents tried harder, it as more fun to watch. Really no clue why Selby couldn't maintain one bit of his performance. I'd really love for the Masters to continue as Top 16 invitational, rather than getting the average PTC-Round of 64 game quality of the Quarters so far.

Also rage @ Eurosport Germany coverage, both television and write-ups. Playing down the great games, featuring Sullivan's average form instead.

Change of subjects: I hope I do find it in me to update the German Masters Qualifier some time soon, though it was horrible for my team.

edit:

Neil didn't go for it. It wasn't such a good split, deserved better. He's played the plant well though. Neil likes plants, he's a vegan after all.

Thanks for updating the points, Gecko!

It was a little disappointing to see Barry Hawkins not playing very well in the finals. The frequent "Ronnie!" shouts were also annoying. O'Sullivan was not as impressive as in some of the highlight videos I watched, but winning a tournament like this after so much time off is respectable.

As for my team, I hope that Neil Robertson will do better in the next tournaments. Mark Allen being my best player is a little weird for me, but it's because I've never actually see him play somehow.

Look, it's a reply to this topic

Neil Robertson is fascinating this season. He played so well in the UK, the International and the Masters, yet he also screwed up greatly in other tournaments. If you haven't seen the game, the Robertson vs. Trump Quarters might just be the best play of this season. It was really amazing by both; six centuries iirc in eleven frames are absolutely rare.

As for Allen goes: Allen is a huge danger to anyone on short distances. He mostly struggles to maintain his form in the course of a week. He often loses his temper, his concentration or both. In the past few years it has gotten better, he seemed to have settled down. If you want to see one of his best performances, I suggest the first session of Higgins vs. Allen in last year's Masters (equal to the Trump/Robertson of last week).

-> VOD on snookerroom<-
Mark Allen by Tequila

As for Ronnie goes...

Love him or hate him. I'm definitely not a fan of his personality, though his skill is argueably legendary tier. People will tell you how hard his life was (father and mother both in prison, severe depression, yadda yadda), and how that excuses a lot of what he does. It explains why he couldn't do well under stress, but I still think he's acting up too much for this sport, even now, years after supposedly being on top of his form.

My problem is his attitude, e.g. not sinking the last black of a 147, making racist remarks about Chinese translators and the audience, or claiming Snooker is "too quiet", despite having the loudest audience. He'd also complain about this and that to only later do what he critized. I remember how he bad mouthed any Selby fan after his loss against Selby in the Masters: too loud, too distracting, this isn't Pool, bla bla bla.

All in all, Sullivan is a huge talent wasted on an arrogant player. He holds tons of records, but in the end, he can't overtower players like A. Higgins, J. White, Taylor, Davis or Hendry only because he was spoiled too early in his career.

Yeah, I watched the Trump vs Robertson, and it was a great game :)
For the few matches I've watched so far, these two with Mark Selby and Liang Wenbo (love his attitude) are my favorite players. Of course, there's a lot of players to discover still.
So, thanks for the videos for Mark Allen. I already checked the video by Tequila and will watch the Masters session.

Yeah, Neil really cleaned up his act. Maybe he quit Hearthstone or something. Kinda sad I didn't listen to my gut and didn't keep Allen, but I really shouldn't complain at this point. I still don't know about Trump, though. There are times, when it seems like he really matured and then there are times when he just throws games, even though it's obvious he could do much better. So far it seems he will stay that little bit inconsistent for a while, but he still plays really well overall. About Ronnie:

I think it's hard to say his attitude got in the way of his talent, they seem inseparable. That irritable character he has is the reason he can get into the break building flow that well and sometimes not at all. He developed his ability so well due to the obsession that comes with mania. The hypocrisy he sometimes displays is also because of that. Talent isn't a number on a character sheet. I don't think his family issues are the reason people give him a lot of leeway, everyone's got stuff to deal with, most of the time it's just not that open to see, that's just a stupid excuse.

He's a controversial character, people love their drama and Ronnie always delivers some of that. While he's not an entertainer, his games often entertain. Like it or not, he's the name in snooker for the last decade or so and he always draws a crowd. Is he a role model like the other greats of snooker? Hell no. Does he promote the hell out of snooker? Yeah, probably. Will he be named besides them in the future? My bet is on yes, but only times will tell.

That said, he shouldn't be allowed to sit on his ass all season and then play the Masters. Sports leagues usually weed out people that behave that way, and I think the rules are pretty bad, if you can pull off stuff like that. Also the show he does is kinda disgusting, I can't watch that shit, it's so incredibly forced.

Dayum, dat Selby. And he already white washed the next one in Berlin. He seems to have dealt with that loss against Ronnie in the Masters pretty well. And McManus is already out, though it's not unexpected, playing against Hawkins. My guys all got manageable first round opponents, while Gecko is getting the short end of the stick by rolling Trump - Captain. Seeds have so much influence on the score, I wonder how snooker would work out on McMahon or something similar.

The games so far were mostly mediocre, Trump being the only exception. However, if the GM is anything like the rest of the season, Gould will destroy Trump and we get Dott vs. Joyce in the finals :ugly:

Seriously though, cheering a lot for Day, this time he could do it.

Yeah, this was a fun tournament. Lots of players and fun little interviews to get to know them a little better, their bewildered facial expressions when getting brought in by those girls, and a more relaxed atmosphere in general. Bingham smacking Lawler with the golf club. Swail and his cowboy hat. And later in the tournament things suddenly get tense as shit. Kinda glad Hull took it, he deserved it by taking out MJW prior and losing it in this kind of fashion might be more valuable to Brecel than actually winning it. They should do these more often.

Oben
