The 53rd Season of BWCL is scheduled to start Sunday, the 2nd of May at 19:00 CEST. With the new season we’re introducing a multitude of changes to the system, which includes:

  • Management Pages for Clan Rosters
  • A new Line-Up / Reporting workflow
  • A Complaint-System
  • Reconnection with BWCL’s origin, broodwar.de
  • A new team of admins

Google Drive & BWCL

We had to re-invent the Google Drive System in a very short period of time. Quite a few functions changed, so that Clans now have to take more responsibility to manage their own team. We seriously hope that most of the system is bug-free, but can’t promise anything. Hence, we’re already asking for your patience if you encounter problems. We promise to find a better solution and move away from the Google product as soon as possible. This is only meant as a temporary way to organize such a huge league.

The most important change: Clans now get access to “Management Sheets”, in which leaders can add / change players on their own. They’re also able to have a look at a personalized “Schedule”, where they’ll see who their opponents are. There, line-ups and scores have to be reported. The reporting is possible after a clan war ended. Every leader should have been given access already.

FAQs:

  1. Can one person (Leader) manage several squads?

Yes. Ask an admin if you need access.

  1. Can a leader also play in a squad?

Yes. Add yourself to the list of players. Important: you can only play in one squad!

  1. I need help using the system

Contact a league admin in our Public Discord.

  1. I found a bug

Use the channel #drive-problems in Discord and tell us.

  1. Some details of my clan needs fixing, e.g. “Clan tag is not correct”

Use the channel #drive-problems in Discord and tell us.

Line-Ups & Reporting

As mentioned, with the new Clan Management things changed in the way clan war scores are reported. In the past you could submit your line-up before a clan war was played, now you can’t. The second you enter your line-up, your opponent can see it on the general Google Drive overview. That’s not a bug, that’s a feature.

Downside:

Some clans insist on submissions due to “strategic” reasons. If you want some sense of fairness in the procedure, follow the schematic explained to you in the leader tutorial. That is:

  • The clan currently placing better in the season has to nominate their first player.
  • The clan lower placed in the season has to nominate their first AND second player.
  • The clan higher placed then nominates second and third player and so on and so forth

For the start of the season, the clan “higher placed” means whoever is listed higher in the overall sheet.

Upside:

Whenever you have to switch players (e.g. due to lag issues), you can do that on your own. You don’t need an admin for that, at all.

Important:

In case of postponements, we still need to rely on you to report the games as soon as they are finished. If you miss to report games, we will add penalty points. If you can’t report due to bugs, tell us as soon as possible.

Complaints for more Transparency

Anyone who actively participates in BWCL now has the option to issue a “complaint” about any administrator’s ruling. It doesn’t matter about what: Be it a sanction due to a flame, a walk over you don’t agree with or a black list entry / player ban.

You can make your case in the channel #complaint in Discord. An admin who wasn’t invovled in the decision will review the incident and give you a final decision later. Even the Head Admin’s decision can be vetoed and undone.

However, please be respectful when addressing a problem. We’re human, we do make mistakes and we don’t always see things the same way. Doesn’t mean we can still agree that a basic sense of mutual respect is key to overcome differences of opinions.

Also, the complaints shouldn’t be used as a way to “win by rules”, rather than by winning due to playing better.

BWCL: Our Mission

The league was now restarted for at least the fifth time since its first release. Our adventure has been a long one and hopefully won’t end in the near future. It’s very important to us, the senior administration and the administration of this page, to stress out that we have one mission: To give the entire community a central hub of competition. In contrast to other projects we don’t see ourselves as the most serious arena, nor do we see us as support for only the foreign elite. Beginners, casuals, passionate fans and great players alike should be able to bond over good games. It’s not about money, it’s about sharing our hobby that was there before some of our audience was born and will hopefully be there when our children are old enough to get a hang of the game.

This being said, we have to spent a few words on “why” you are reading this post on broodwar.net and not on TL or a similar platform.

In 2001 BWCL was founded by members of the German community at “broodwar.de” (bw.de). It was the synergy between fanpage and users that made such a project even possible. Over the years the German speaking league grew exponentially and became the reason why the German National Team had an ample supply of the greatest players. Teams like the Templars of Twilight, pro Gaming, Deutschlands kranke Horde and eSa Lehnitz boosted the skill to unknown levels. To this day ToT)Mondragon(, the Zerg Wunderkind, still holds the record of best player with overall win stats in both 1n1 and 2n2 of over 90% against the strongest opponents.
In the later years the community changed, mostly due to players leaving to newer titles. Consequently the German speaking scene opened its doors to the rest of the international competition. Teams like Meet Your Makers and pro Gaming added legendary players to their roster - Draco, Testie, SEn, ret and others were common names. In its prime BWCL now had a waiting list of over 30 clans between seasons.
In between time, bw.de was added to the “ingame.de” network, a multi host of several other video game fan pages - quite similar to ICCup’s mother TheAbyss. Now BWCL also gained from the merge: News and coverage became easier and a tournament portal (BW4Ever) was also part of the “bw.de” package.
Over the years the community changed quite a bit and BWCL had hard times surviving. Eventually in 2012 the league was temporarily closed. Both admins and teams were lacking.
In the dire years in between also ingame suffered a bit and the league / tournament script weren’t updated.
In 2017, with the release of BW:Remastered we revived BWCL and later merged it with the ICCCL. As ICCup also ceased support for BW, we had to use third party systems, such as Challonge and now Google Drive.
Meanwhile, bw.de and ingame parted in late 2020 / Early 2021 and moved the URL from bw.de to broodwar.net - and here we are.

We understand bw.de isn’t what it used to be when it comes to Brood War. This, however, doesn’t mean that the community forgot what it bonded over - the greatest RTS of all time. Therefore, we’re going to try to foster the same synergy that was a pivotal part of the international scene. In the upcoming months, we try to revive a bit of the infrastructure.

By now you hopefully understand why you’re reading the news here - and not on TL, reddit or any other platform. This is our home and we’re here to stay.

New Admins

In the past 24 months (or even longer) the league was mostly organized by Face. We wouldn’t be here if it was not for his efforts, he carried on the torch while the rest of us were simply too busy. Yet, we learned that the sheer amount of work can burn out even the strongest, hence we added new names to the team. Together, we hope to lay the groundwork for a longer lasting and sustainable future.

If you want to help out, a few positions would still be open. Most importantly:

  • Anyone who wants to help with (written) coverage of the league
  • Casters (experienced or not, S-Class or total newb, we support anyone)
  • Translators for the Spanish community
  • Optional: Translators for other communities (Russian, Polish, Portoguese)

Apply to Cele on Discord (responding in evening hours European time).

For now, our main task is to get the league itself running again. Mind you: Games are most important, the rest is purely optional.

For the future we have a ton of ideas what COULD be done and we’re always open for suggestions - small or big. This includes a new portal, new editions of the King of Kings series and maybe even the revival of the Clan Cup (Clan Tournament) and the Premier League.

Hopefully the best has yet to come.

Minor rulechanges for the current season:

- The Walkover rules and penalties were adjusted. A full Walkover win is now 4 points, a full Walkover loss loss comes with a -2 points penalty (down from -4).
- Walkover rule for single sets: in case of a single Walkover in one or two sets, a penalty of -1 will be applied, this is non cumulative (meaning if you forfeit 2 matches, it is still only -1). And it is a 2-0 win for that match for the opposing team.
All tables have now been updated with these changes.
Thanks and GL to everyone this season
